FROM a 1915 PUBLICATION ABOUT OTTO SCHMIDT, THE FIRST RESIDENT OF THE VICTORIAN HOME SELLING ON THIS AUCTION

Otto Schmidt became a resident of Berger when but six years of age.  At age eighteen he engaged in the saloon business and in trading in cattle.  In 1900 came the turning point in his career.  He began to buy mules for H. Kahn & Son of East St. Louis, who were furnishing them to the United states government for the Spanish-American war.  He continued in the employ of that firm for ninety days, shipping one hundred and eighty mules.  Deciding to engage in business independently, he set out for himself and was so successful that in 1903 he opened his first mule barn, a five thousand dollar structure.  Since 1903 he has built a most extensive business in horses and mules.  He began his transactions with a capital of less than three thousand dollars and his business has grown to an annual business today exceeding one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.  Mr. Schmidt is a most energetic and active man, ever interested in new business propositions as they present themselves.  He has an inexhaustible capacity for work and easily dominates any situation in business deals that might seem hopeless to less farsighted men, yet he finds time to take part in public affairs and enterprises of benefit to the community.  Although exacting, he is kind-hearted and ever ready to hold out a helping hand to those in need or distress.  It may be said that never a friend called upon him in vain.

Mr. Schmidt is as independent in his political views as he has been in his private transactions, preferring to follow his own lead.  Mr. Schmidt and family live in one of the finest residences in Franklin County.  It is a brick and stone house, handsomely furnished, provided with its own gas plant, its own water works and also a sewerage system.  He owns the best set of mule barns in the state of Missouri, modernly constructed.  His barns can store six thousand bushels of grain, two hundred tons of loose hay and fifty tons of baled straw.  Mr. Schmidt owns one hundred and eighty acres of land and half interest in a four hundred acre farm near Columbia and two hundred acres of land in Gasconade County.  He is the owner of considerable residential property in Berger and is the second largest stockholder in the Bank of Berger, serving as vice president and director.  He is connected with various other enterprises.  Through his various activities Mr. Schmidt has largely contributed toward the general growth and development of Berger and Franklin County

. On May 28, 1896, Mr. Schmidt married Miss Rosa M. Schaffner, a daughter of Fritz and Susanna (Bohrn) Schaffner.  Her father was a dealer in livestock and also farmed to some extent.  To Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt have been born four children: Russel O., Ruth B., Ray H. and Ralph W.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt are welcomed in the best circles of Franklin County.  Mr. Schmidt has few outside interests finding the greatest happiness at his own fireside with his family.  His career should be an example to the young men of today because he has proven that opportunity still exists.  Not twenty years ago he was practically in a dependent position, and within that short time has built a fortune which is a credit to his ability.  He is honored and respected and has adopted business principles which would reflect credit and honor upon any man.

Otto Schmidt died in 1952 leaving the splendid Victorian home to his wife, Rosa. Later it became the home of his youngest son, Ralph W. Schmidt.
